ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY
A lasting tribute to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our nation, Arlington National Cemetery is visited by millions of people each year. These hallowed grounds are where more than 400,000 service men and women and their family members are laid to rest. There are nearly 30 funerals held each day, honoring those who have given their life to defend the values and ideals of America. If you’re planning a vacation to Washington DC this 4th of July weekend, a visit to Arlington is something you must do.
WASHINGTON MONUMENT
One of the most celebrated and spectacular sights on the National Mall, the Washington Monument, stands as a grand tribute to our nation’s first President, George Washington. This 4th of July weekend, come and check out the 555 foot obelisk is also one of the oldest and most recognizable memorials in the City. While construction began in 1848, the monument was not completed until 1884 because of financial difficulties during the Civil War.
SMITHSONIAN MUSEUMS
There are more than 19 Smithsonian museums in Washington DC and several others that are must do’s this 4th of July weekend. NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE
One of the largest 4th of July parades in America starts at 11:45am on Constitution Avenue and 7th street. The parade will feature invited bands, special military presentations, floats and celebrities. Get there early to ensure you have a great spot for viewing the excitement. This is definitely one of the best events to attend in Washington, DC during the holiday.
A CAPITOL FOURTH
Be sure to catch the free concert on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol building from 8:00pm- 9:30pm on July 4th. Each year the concert features celebrity musicians, the National Symphony Orchestra and a great view of the largest fireworks display in the country. This nationally televised event features Tom Bergeron, Maestro Jack Everly, US Army Presidential Salute Battery and the Choral Arts Society of Washington. Like everything in Washington DC on the 4th of July, be sure to arrive extra early for the best seats.
NATIONAL MALL
Don’t miss out on the National Mall 4th of July celebration. Public access to the National Mall begins at 10:00 a.m. Seating space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to construction, certain areas of the National Mall will be closed to the public.
