Georgetown’s coach Ed Cooley is building a young team with a strategy to develop chemistry before Big East play. So far, the Hoyas (6-1) have had their best start since 2018-19, winning four straight games after a loss to Notre Dame.
Despite having 15 freshmen and sophomores, fifth-year graduate student Micah Peavy is leading the team with 15.9 points per game and impressive 3-point shooting. He scored 24 points in a recent win over Albany, with Thomas Sorber adding another double-double.
UMBC (5-4) has also had success, winning its last two games in a seven-game homestand. Offense has been their key, averaging 98.8 points in wins and only 63.5 in losses.
Coach Jim Ferry is pleased with his team’s offensive flow, particularly their 21 assists in a 92-69 win over Morgan State. Bryce Johnson leads the Retrievers with 15.9 points per game and a strong 3-point shooting percentage of 41.5%.
UMBC is also a top-20 team nationally in 3-point shooting, making 40.4% of their attempts. Georgetown faces a challenging test as they complete their homestand against the Retrievers.
